It is narrated from Ikrimah bin Khalid bin Sa'id bin al-As al-Makhzumi that he met Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said to him: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! We, Banu al-Mughirah, are a people in whom there is (ancestral) pride and haughtiness. Have you heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say anything about this? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "There is no man who regards himself as great and walks with pride and arrogance, except that he will meet Allah Almighty while Allah is intensely angry with him."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the conditions of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it (10/5995) through the chain of Yunus bin al-Qasim as a marfu' report, but the story is not mentioned in it.
Technical note: The word "al-Shaykhayn" (al-Bukhari and Muslim) dropped out of the manuscripts; it has been restored from the printed edition and from the book of Ibn Hajar ("Ithaf al-Mahara" (10045)). Important point: According to al-Dhahabi, this narration is only "on the condition of Muslim".
