Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2012

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: There were two guarantees of safety on earth; one of them has been taken up, while the other remains: "And Allah would not punish them while you are among them, nor would Allah punish them while they are seeking forgiveness." [Surah al-Anfal: 33]

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name had become corrupted into "'Ubayd"; the correct form has been adopted from Ahmad's "al-Musnad" and al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir".

Grading: This is a "hasan" report; although Muhammad bin Abi Ayyub is a Successor from whom only one narrator narrated, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in al-Thiqat. A second route of it is also reported from Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it likewise through the chain of Waki' bin al-Jarrah.
Grading: With al-Tabarani and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi there is another route of it with the chain of "'Umar Kisra", who is a well-known narrator of historical reports (akhbari); therefore this chain is "hasan". He was called "Kisra" because he was an expert on the affairs of the Persians.
Defect in the chain: In another route Isma'il bin Ibrahim is "da'if" and his teacher is "majhul" (unknown); therefore this chain is weak.
Technical note: Sufyan bin Waki' narrated it as "marfu'" (the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying), but he is weak, whereas Khalaf narrated it as "mawquf" (a Companion's saying), and that is more correct, because all the other chains support it.
Reference / Source: From Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), the words "I am a source of security for my Companions" are authentically established as marfu' in Sahih Muslim and Ibn Hibban.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for this mawquf narration is the narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that passed before it.
Grading: It is also reported from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) as mawquf (Tafsir al-Tabari and al-Bayhaqi), and its chain is "sahih".
