It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ishatan naqiyyah, wa mitatan sawiyyah, wa maraddan ghayra mukhzin wa la fadih' (O Allah, I ask You for a pure life, a balanced death, and a return (to the Hereafter) that is neither disgraceful nor shameful).
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
4/ 172. Note / Clarification: In our manuscripts this word is reported as "hadi" (with the ya'), although by the grammatical rule the ya' should have been dropped. However, there is also a usage in the language in which the ya' of a manqus noun is retained in the nominative and genitive even when it is without the definite article, as reciting "hadi" with the ya' is also reported in Imam Ibn Kathir's reading of "wa li-kulli qawmin hadi" (and for every people there is a guide).
Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" on account of its supporting reports; its chain is "hasan" because of Khallad bin Yazid al-Ju'fi and Sharik al-Nakha'i. Al-Haythami also called it good, and it has other sahih supporting reports. Technical note: Mujahid al-Makki, who is in the chain, also heard from 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr bin al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him). Most sources mention "'Abd Allah bin 'Amr" here in place of "'Abd Allah bin 'Umar", which is more correct; however, such a disagreement over the identity of the Companion does not affect the authenticity of the hadith. Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Da'awat" (196) with this same chain of Imam al-Hakim. Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani, al-Quda'i and al-Tabari narrated it through Abu Kurayb as part of the Musnad of "'Abd Allah bin 'Amr bin al-'As". The "'Abd Allah bin 'Umar" printed in al-Tabarani's book "al-Du'a'" is apparently a corruption (a scribal error), because in his other book "al-Kabir" it is in the Musnad of Ibn 'Amr with the same shaykh and chain. Technical note: The narration of Imam al-Bazzar and al-Haythami mentions a narrator named "Khalid bin Zuray'", but research shows that this is a corruption of the name "Khallad bin Yazid al-Ju'fi", because no narrator named "Khalid bin Zuray'" exists in the biographical books. With al-Bazzar too it is a narration of Ibn 'Amr. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for it is the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) (Musnad Ahmad 32/19402), whose chain is "hasan" among corroborating reports. Grading: There is also the "mursal" narration of Habib bin Abi Thabit, whose narrators are thiqah.
