It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, a man attains, through his good character, the ranks of one who stands in prayer by night and fasts by day."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it, and it has a sahih supporting report (shahid) on the condition of Muslim as well.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: On the basis of supporting reports it is "sahih li-ghayrihi". Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to the majority of hadith scholars, al-Muttalib bin Abd Allah bin Hantab did not hear from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), so the chain is broken. Note: Abu al-Nadr is "Hashim bin al-Qasim al-Khurasani". Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in his Musnad through the chain of Abu al-Nadr Hashim bin al-Qasim, by this same route. Reference / Source: Ahmad, Abu Dawud (4798) and Ibn Hibban (480) narrated it through various routes from "Amr bin Abi Amr", the client of al-Muttalib. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The next hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is a supporting report for it, and its chain is "hasan". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Abd Allah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) (Musnad Ahmad: 11/6648) also supports it, and its chain is hasan. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A third supporting report on this subject is the hadith of Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him), but its chain is "weak".
