Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 199

It is narrated from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them) met, and Ibn Abbas asked him: In your view, which verse in the Book of Allah gives the most hope? Abdullah bin Amr said: "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah" [al-Zumar: 53]. Ibn Abbas said: But (in my view the most hopeful) is this statement of Ibrahim (peace be upon him): "My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead. He said: Have you not believed? He said: Yes, but so that my heart may be at rest" [al-Baqarah: 260]. So Allah Almighty was pleased with the reply of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), "Bala" (Yes, indeed!) (and this is the remedy for the whisperings that Satan casts into hearts).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Correction: In the manuscripts "al-Shami" is written here, which is a "tashif" (scribal error); the correct word is "al-Sami" (an attribution to Samah bin Lu'ayy). This narrator (Bishr) is an Iraqi from Basrah.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are thiqah but the chain is "munqati'" (broken). Muhammad bin al-Munkadir's hearing of this meeting between Ibn Abbas and Abd Allah bin Amr is not established, because he was very young at the time.
Important point: Al-Dhahabi too explicitly stated its break in "al-Talkhis".
Reference / Source: Abu Ubayd (Fada'il al-Qur'an) and Ibn Abi Hatim narrated it via Abd Allah bin Salih.
Technical note: Abu Ubayd mentioned Safwan bin Sulaym alongside Muhammad bin al-Munkadir, but Safwan too did not hear from them (the two Companions). Moreover, Abd Allah bin Salih has a poor memory (su' al-hifz).
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (al-Zuhd) and al-Tabari narrated it through the chain of Shu'bah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this chain there is an "unnamed narrator" (rajul) who could not be identified. Zayd bin Ali is the son of Zayn al-Abidin.
Important point: This hadith will come again in the author's work at number (7863).
