It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umayr bin Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) - who was a Companion - that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said during the Farewell Pilgrimage: "Behold! The friends of Allah are those who pray: those who establish the five prayers that have been made obligatory upon them, fast Ramadan and seek its reward, regarding it as a duty upon them, give the zakah of their wealth gladly, and avoid the major sins which Allah has forbidden." Then a man asked him (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! What are the major sins? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are nine: associating partners with Allah, killing a believer unjustly, fleeing from the battlefield on the day of the advance, consuming the wealth of the orphan, consuming usury (riba), slandering a chaste woman, disobeying Muslim parents, and treating as lawful (the violation of) the Sacred House, which is your qiblah in life and in death." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever dies without having committed these major sins, and establishes the prayer and gives the zakah, will be with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a house whose doors are made of gold."
The two Shaykhs used as evidence all the narrators of this hadith except Abd al-Hamid bin Sinan. As for Umayr bin Qatadah, he is a Companion, and there is agreement on recording and using as evidence the narrations of his son Ubayd.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Correction: In the manuscripts the word here is "huwa", whereas according to "Sunan al-Bayhaqi" and the other takhrij sources the correct word is the one we have established in the text, and this is the usual form (al-jaddah).
Grading: Its chain is "weak". Technical note / Criticism (jarh): This chain is weak because Abd al-Hamid bin Sinan is majhul (unknown). Al-Bukhari said about this hadith: "fihi nazar" (it is questionable). Reference: Abu Dawud (2875) and al-Nasa'i (3461) also narrated it. Note / Clarification: In Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i this narration is given in "abridged" form. Reference / Source: Al-Tahawi and Ibn Abi Hatim narrated it in full. Important point: This full narration also mentions the ninth major sin (kabirah), which al-Hakim did not mention, namely "sihr" (sorcery). Important point: This hadith will come again later at number (7859). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A mention of these nine major sins is narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) as "mawquf" (his own statement) in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (8), and its chain is "strong". 2/ 343 - 356. Further reading: For a detailed discussion of the hadith concerning the major sins, see al-Tahawi's "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (2/343-356).
