Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: Manuscript (B) has the words "Subhanaka Allahumma rabbana" with the addition of the Divine Name (Allah), whereas this addition is not in the rest of our manuscripts, nor in most of the narrations from Hajjaj bin Muhammad.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" on account of its supporting reports; there is no harm in the narrators of this chain, but Wuhayb bin Khalid narrated it from Suhayl bin Abi Salih, from 'Awn bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Utbah as "maqtu'" (the saying of a Successor rather than of a Companion).
Defect ('illah): On this basis Imam Ahmad, al-Bukhari, Abu Zur'ah, Abu Hatim, al-Daraqutni and others, preferring Wuhayb's "maqtu'" narration over the "marfu'" narration (reaching the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) of Musa bin 'Uqbah, declared the latter defective (ma'lul).
Important point: A group of trustworthy narrators transmitted another narration, about "the sin of a gathering", with the chain Suhayl bin Abi Salih from his father from Abu Hurayrah; it seems Musa bin 'Uqbah confused these two narrations. And Allah knows best.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Four other narrators corroborated Musa bin 'Uqbah, whom al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar mentioned in "Fath al-Bari" (24/611), but according to al-Hafiz all those narrations are not sahih.
Grading: The most sahih is the narration of Musa bin 'Uqbah itself, which has been declared defective; but Imam al-Tirmidhi did not consider this a defect and declared the hadith sahih. In any case, this hadith is reported from a group of Companions, the details of which are in "Fath al-Bari".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (16/10415), al-Tirmidhi (3433) and al-Nasa'i (10157) narrated it through various routes from Hajjaj bin Muhammad with this same chain. Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih gharib".
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (594) narrated it through the chain of Musa bin Tariq from Ibn Jurayj, and Imam Ahmad (14/8818) through the chain of Isma'il bin 'Ayyash from Suhayl bin Abi Salih.
Criticism of a narrator: Isma'il bin 'Ayyash's narration from non-Syrians is weak, and this narration is of that kind, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar stated explicitly in "al-Fath" (24/116).
Reference / Source: The narration of Wuhayb bin Khalid by which Musa bin 'Uqbah's narration was criticised was recorded by Imam al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (4/105), al-'Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (2/185) and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Tarikh Baghdad" (15/124).
Technical note: Abu Dawud (4858) narrated it with the chain of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi 'Amr, who is a "majhul" (unknown) narrator, and the trustworthy narrator Sa'id bin Abi Hilal contradicted him and narrated it as "mawquf" on 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr bin al-'As (the saying of a Companion).
Important point: What is apparent is that the unknown narrator, his mind going to the well-known chain (al-Maqburi from Abu Hurayrah), mistakenly made it marfu'.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic the narration of al-Sa'ib bin Yazid is found in Imam Ahmad (24/15729) with a "sahih" chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) is in Imam Ahmad (41/24486) and al-Nasa'i (1268) with a "sahih" chain, and it has already passed with the author at no. (1848).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadiths of Jubayr bin Mut'im, Abu Barzah al-Aslami and Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with them) will come with the author at nos. (1991 to 1993).
Grading: A "mawquf" narration from 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr bin al-'As is established with a "sahih" chain.
Grading: A "mawquf" narration is also reported from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri with a "sahih" chain.
Important point: According to al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar it has "the ruling of marfu'", because such a thing cannot be said from one's own opinion.
Details of the narration: This narration is also reported from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) as mawquf with trustworthy narrators; although al-Tabarani also transmitted it as marfu', its chain is "da'if".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has several other marfu' and mursal supporting reports, which al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar collected in "al-Nukat" and "Fath al-Bari".
Technical note: The author's (al-Hakim's) calling this hadith "sahih al-isnad" is an error on his part, because Wuhayb made it the saying of 'Awn bin 'Abd Allah (maqtu'), and the author himself, in his other book "Ma'rifat 'Ulum al-Hadith", agreeing with the critical imams, acknowledged its defect.
