It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you ask Allah, ask Him with the palms of your hands, and do not ask Him with their backs, and (after the supplication) wipe your faces with them."
Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted into "Hayyan".
Grading: The chain is "very weak" because of Salih bin Hassan, since he is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith). Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (1181, 3866) narrated it through 'A'idh bin Habib from Salih bin Hassan. Reference / Source: In the chain of Abu Dawud (1485) too, two narrators are majhul (unknown), and the unnamed narrator who narrates from Muhammad bin Ka'b is most likely this same Salih bin Hassan. Details of the narration: It has another route in al-Tabarani (12234) from Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Khusayf, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, that when he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated he would turn the inner side of his palms towards his face. Grading: This much of the hadith is strengthened by supporting reports; although Khusayf's memory is weak and Ibn Ishaq is a mudallis, this chain is fit to be cited among supporting reports. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for supplicating with the inner side of the palms is the hadith of Malik bin Yasar al-Sakuni (Abu Dawud 1486), whose chain is "hasan". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The second supporting report is the hadith of Abu Bakrah found in al-Tabarani, Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis and Abu Nu'aym (Tarikh Asbahan 2/224), and its narrators are thiqah. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The third supporting report is the "mursal" narration of Ibn Muhayriz (Ibn Abi Shaybah 10/286); its narrators are also thiqah. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The fourth supporting report is the "mursal" narration of 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr ('Abd al-Razzaq 3249); its narrators are also thiqah.
