It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me while I was supplicating with my fingers, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One (point with one finger), one," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed with his index finger.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) through both chains, and the narration of Abu Mu'awiyah is sahih on the condition of the two Shaykhs, provided that Abu Salih al-Samman's hearing from Sayyiduna Sa'd is established.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The base manuscripts of al-Mustadrak have "bi-asabi'i" (plural), whereas all the other hadith scholars mention the dual (two fingers); in the Arabic language using the plural form for the dual is permissible, as in the Qur'an the word "qulubukuma" occurs.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih"; the disagreement over al-A'mash is not harmful. Technical note: Al-A'mash is Sulayman bin Mihran and Abu Mu'awiyah is Muhammad bin Khazim. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1499) and al-Nasa'i (1197) narrated it through two different routes.
Important point: Imam al-Mizzi and al-Dhahabi explicitly stated that Abu Salih al-Samman saw Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) and also heard from him; he was born during the caliphate of 'Umar.
