Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1974

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Shakal bin Humayd (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, teach me a supplication by which I may seek refuge." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of my hand and said: "Say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri nafsi, wa min sharri maniyyi' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, from the evil of my sight, from the evil of my self (heart), and from the evil of my semen (lust and private parts))." Until I had memorised it.
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Grading: The hadith is sahih; although this chain is da'if because of al-Khadir bin Aban, it has other corroborations.
Grading: Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi narrated it, and al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan gharib". These narrations mention "the evil of the tongue and the heart" in place of "the evil of the self".
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i narrated it through Waki' and Abu Nu'aym, and its wording resembles that of Imam Ahmad's narration.
Linguistic explanation: "Sharr maniyyi" (the evil of my semen) means the overpowering of sexual desire, so that a person may be kept safe from sins such as zina and looking at what is forbidden.
