It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge from five things: from cowardice, from miserliness, from the evil of old age (a feeble, useless old age), from the punishment of the grave, and from the trial of the heart (suspicion and rancour).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.
Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih". All its narrators ('Amr bin Maymun, Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i and Isra'il bin Yunus) are thiqah and eminent. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah and al-Nasa'i narrated it through Isra'il bin Yunus with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i narrated it through Yunus bin Abi Ishaq from his father Abu Ishaq. Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i narrated it through Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah, stating that 'Amr bin Maymun heard it from several Companions. Variation in the chain: Zakariyya bin Abi Za'idah narrated it as connected from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), while Sufyan al-Thawri narrated it as mursal; this variation is not harmful, because the narrator heard it from several Companions. Grading: The variation among the routes of the hadith is not harmful, because 'Amr bin Maymun heard it from several Companions; so sometimes he would name a Companion and sometimes, for brevity, narrate it as mursal. This is acceptable among the scholars of hadith. Linguistic explanation: "Fitnat al-sadr" (the trial of the breast) means the doubts, envy, rancour and bad character that arise in the heart, or the constriction that is a sign of misguidance, i.e. aversion to the Hereafter and absorption in this world. Linguistic explanation: "Su' al-'umr" (an evil life) means the state of old age that leaves one helpless, or one's life being spent in deeds that bring no benefit in the Hereafter.
