Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 196

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, one of us commits a sin. He ((peace and blessings be upon him)) said: "It is written in his record of deeds." He said: Then he seeks forgiveness and repents. He ((peace and blessings be upon him)) said: "He is forgiven and his repentance is accepted." He said: Then he goes back and sins again. He said: "It is written against him." He said: Then he repents and seeks forgiveness. He said: "He is forgiven and his repentance is accepted." He said: Then he goes back and sins again. He said: "It is written against him." He said: Then he seeks forgiveness and repents. He said: "He is forgiven and his repentance is accepted; and Allah does not tire (of forgiving) until you (yourselves) tire (of repenting)."
This hadith is sahih on the condition of Bukhari, but the two of them did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The portion from "he said: then he returns and sins again" up to here has dropped out of manuscript (B).

Grading: On the basis of corroborating chains and supporting reports this chain is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although Abd Allah bin Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, is not free of criticism, he is corroborated, and al-Bukhari narrated from him in ta'liq form.
Note / Clarification: Abu al-Khayr is "Marthad bin Abd Allah al-Yazani".
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (6695) via Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Ruyani and al-Tabarani (al-Kabir, al-Awsat and al-Du'a') narrated it through the route of Abd Allah bin Salih, and it will come again at number (7851).
Grading: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared it "hasan sahih" and al-Haythami declared its chain "hasan".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Abu Hurayrah (number 7800) supports it.
Technical note / Error (wahm): Al-Hakim erred here in presenting it as "mustadrak" (additional) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, whereas it is already in al-Bukhari (7507) and Muslim (2758).
Note / Clarification: Regarding the phrase "Allah does not grow weary until you grow weary", al-Baghawi says that it means Allah does not grow weary (of rewarding) even if you grow weary, because weariness (fatigue) is impossible for Allah.
Note / Clarification: Another meaning is that Allah does not cut off His bounty from you until you yourselves stop asking Him.
Note / Clarification: One view is that Allah does not stop giving reward until you stop doing deeds. Here "malal" (weariness) means abandoning the deed, because weariness is the cause of abandoning it.
General principle: According to al-Isma'ili and the verifying scholars, it is used figuratively (majaz) by way of verbal correspondence (muqabalah lafziyyah).
Note / Clarification: Al-Qurtubi says that since Allah cuts off the reward of the one who abandons deeds out of weariness, Allah's cutting off reward was expressed as weariness (the effect being given the name of its cause).
