Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 194

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This Ummah will be gathered (on the Day of Resurrection) in three groups: one group who will enter Paradise without reckoning; a second group whose reckoning will be easy, after which they will enter Paradise; and a third group who will come carrying on their backs sins like mountains. Allah will ask about them - while He knows them better - : Who are these? They (the angels) will say: These are servants from among Your servants. Allah will say: Take their sins off them and place them on the Jews and the Christians, and admit them into Paradise by My mercy."
This hadith, from the narration of Harami bin Umarah, is sahih on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it. As for Hajjaj bin Nusayr, I mentioned him alongside Harami so that the chain would be elevated (a'la).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (S) and (B) and the printed book the name has been distorted into "Abu al-Hasan" (the correct name is Abu al-Husayn).
Note / Clarification: For his biography, see "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (15/568).

Grading: With this wording the narration is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is the weakness of Hajjaj bin Nusayr; moreover, although Shaddad Abu Talhah al-Rasibi was declared trustworthy, according to Ibn Hibban he would sometimes err. Al-Bayhaqi too declared it defective (weak) in "Shu'ab al-Iman", saying that a narration of Shaddad which contradicts (trustworthy narrators) is not accepted.
Reference / Source: Al-Ruyani narrated it in his Musnad (506) through the chain of Muhammad bin Ma'mar from Hajjaj bin Nusayr, by this same route.
Important point: This narration will come again in the author's work at number (7837) through two other routes from Hajjaj bin Nusayr.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Harami bin Umarah narrated it from Shaddad in abridged form (it will come at number 7836): "Some people of my Ummah will come with sins like mountains; Allah will forgive them and place those sins upon the Jews and the Christians."
Reference / Source: Muslim recorded this narration of Harami (2767/51).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In it, after the mention of placing the sins upon others, the narrator expressed doubt, saying "I think that is what he said". Harami (Abu Rawh) said: I do not know from which narrator the doubt comes.
Grading: This narration of Harami from Shaddad is also "shadh" (not preserved).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bayhaqi said that the words "placing the sins upon the Jews" are not preserved, because the Qur'anic principle is: "No bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another." The correct wording is the one narrated by Sa'id bin Abi Burdah.
Reference / Source: The reference here is to the narration in Sahih Muslim (2767/50): "No Muslim man dies but Allah admits a Jew or a Christian into the Fire in his place."
Grading: This chain is sahih, and its wording is the most authentic of what has come in this narration of Abu Burdah.
Reference / Source: Ahmad and Ibn Hibban also narrated it.
Note / Clarification: In the narration of Talhah bin Yahya there is the addition that Allah will say: "This (disbeliever) is your ransom from the Fire."
Note / Clarification: Al-Nawawi says in "Sharh Muslim" that its meaning is that every person has a place appointed in both Paradise and Hell. When the believer enters Paradise, the disbeliever, because of his disbelief, takes his place in Hell.
Important point: "Ransom from the Fire" means that Allah has decreed a number to fill Hell; when the disbelievers enter it because of their sins, they become, in a sense, a ransom for the Muslims.
Reference / Source: The narration of Abu Hurayrah that al-Nawawi mentioned was reported by Ibn Majah (4341) with a sahih chain.
