It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would not leave reciting these words in the morning and in the evening: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fi dini wa dunyaya, wa ahli wa mali. Allahummastur 'awrati, wa amin raw'ati. Allahummahfazni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi, wa 'an yamini wa 'an shimali wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi'azamatika an ughtala min tahti' (O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion and my worldly life, and in my family and my wealth. O Allah, cover my faults and grant me security from my fears (and anxieties). O Allah, protect me from in front of me, from behind me, from my right, from my left and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your greatness from being suddenly destroyed from beneath me); meaning, being swallowed up by the earth.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
8/ (4785). Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts the word "Abi" had dropped out; the correct reading includes "Abi", as found in the Musnad of Ahmad.
8/ (4785). Grading: Its chain is sahih, and it is in the Musnad of Ahmad (8/4785). Reference / Source: Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban narrated it via the chain of 'Ubadah bin Muslim al-Fazari. In al-Nasa'i's narration, the narrator's doubt about the explanation of the word "khasf" (the earth swallowing up) is mentioned.
