Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1924

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Seeking guidance from Allah through istikharah (that is, asking Him for what is good) is part of the good fortune of the son of Adam, and abandoning istikharah with Allah is part of the misfortune of the son of Adam."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is very weak. There is agreement on the weakness of Muhammad bin Abi Humayd, and the narrator who corroborated him is likewise weak.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it likewise via the chain of Rawh bin 'Ubadah.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi narrated it via the chain of Abu 'Amir al-'Aqadi, called it "gharib", and declared Muhammad bin Abi Humayd weak.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr al-Mulayki corroborated him, but he too is a narrator whose weakness is agreed upon.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In another narration of al-Bazzar the chain is changed, but in the end it still comes back to al-Mulayki, so the chain remains weak.
Important point: The sahih hadith of Jabir bin 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) about the istikharah supplication is in al-Bukhari and Ahmad, in which it is stated explicitly that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach us the istikharah.
