Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1902

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: O Messenger of Allah! There is sharpness in my tongue, and most of it is directed at my family. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why are you neglectful of seeking forgiveness? I seek forgiveness from Allah one hundred times in a day and night."
Imam al-Hakim says: This is undoubtedly Ubayd Abu al-Mughirah. Shu'bah narrated its chain and text with doubt, whereas Sufyan bin Sa'id preserved it fully and narrated it without any doubt.

Grading: This chain has the potential of being graded hasan. The story of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) seeking forgiveness is sahih with its supporting reports.
Technical note: There is much disagreement over the name of Abu al-Mughirah (Ubayd, Ubayd Allah, al-Walid, etc.), but Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i narrated from him, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy (thiqat). The core matter (seeking forgiveness 70 or 100 times a day) is established through other sahih routes.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad 38/ (23362) and al-Nasa'i with the chain Muhammad bin Ja'far from Shu'bah.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad, Ibn Majah and al-Nasa'i through the various routes of Isra'il, Abu Bakr bin Ayyash, Abu al-Ahwas and Abu Khalid al-Dalani. All of them called him "Abu al-Mughirah", though the narration of Abu Bakr bin Ayyash mentions "seventy times".
Variation in the chain: Sa'id bin Amir, narrating from Shu'bah, differed and made it "Muslim bin Nadhir from Hudhayfah" (al-Nasa'i: 10209).
Technical note: This is an error of Sa'id bin Amir, since he sometimes made errors.

Guidance: See the narration after it and no. (3748).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Abu Hurayrah in Sahih al-Bukhari (6307), which mentions seeking forgiveness "more than seventy times", is a supporting report.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In Sahih Muslim (2702) there is the narration of al-Agharr al-Muzani: "A veil comes over my heart, and I seek forgiveness a hundred times a day."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The sahih narration of Ibn Umar (Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi and others) is a supporting report: in a single sitting we would count the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying "Rabbi ighfir li wa tub alayya" (My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance) a hundred times.
Note / Clarification: "Dharib al-lisan" refers to a person whose tongue is sharp and who is not careful in what he says. (al-Nihayah)
