Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1901

Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from his father (Husayn bin Ubayd) that he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) before accepting Islam, and when he was about to leave he asked: What should I say (in supplication)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'Allahumma qini sharra nafsi, wa'zim li 'ala rushdi amri' (O Allah, protect me from the evil of my own self, and grant me firmness upon right decision and guidance in my affairs)." He said these words and then left without accepting Islam. Later he accepted Islam and said: O Messenger of Allah! Now that I have accepted Islam, what should I say? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'Allahumma qini sharra nafsi, wa'zim li 'ala rushdi amri, Allahumma-ghfir li ma asrartu wa ma a'lantu, wa ma akhta'tu wa ma 'amadtu, wa ma 'alimtu wa ma jahiltu' (O Allah, protect me from the evil of my own self and grant me firmness upon guidance in my affair. O Allah, forgive me the sins I committed in secret and those I committed openly, those I committed by mistake and those I committed deliberately, those I know and those I am unaware of)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is sahih. There is a disagreement in it: some made it part of the Musnad of Husayn, the father of Imran bin Husayn, and some made it part of the Musnad of Imran himself.
Technical note: This disagreement does not harm the hadith, because both Imran and his father are Companions, and disagreement over the Companion does no harm.
Technical note: Mansur: he is Ibn al-Mu'tamir.

Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad and al-Nasa'i with the chain Shayban and Zakariyya bin Abi Za'idah from Mansur, in which the story is mentioned that Husayn came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Grading: Imam al-Bazzar said: I think that Imran's saying "the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his father" is more correct (aswab).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (19925) narrated via Mutarrif bin Abd Allah from Imran that the most frequent supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was: "O Allah, forgive me my mistakes, my deliberate sins, my secret and open sins, and the sins of my ignorance."
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi (3483) narrated it with the chain Shabib bin Shaybah from al-Hasan al-Basri, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to my father: "Say: O Allah, inspire me with my right guidance."
Defect ('illah): This chain is weak because of the weakness of Shabib and because al-Hasan al-Basri did not hear from Imran.
