It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever eats food and then says: 'Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi at'amani hadha, wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah' (All praise is for Allah who fed me this food and provided it for me without any effort or power of my own), all his past sins are forgiven; and whoever puts on a garment and says: 'Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi kasani hadha min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah' (All praise is for Allah who clothed me with this garment and granted it to me without any effort or power of my own), his past sins are forgiven."
This hadith is sahih on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name has become "Abd al-Rahman" through alteration (error).
74. Grading: Its chain is "layyin" (soft); Abu Marhum and his shaykh Sahl are considered acceptable in corroborations and supporting reports, although they are alone in narrating this hadith. Despite this, Imam al-Tirmidhi in his "Jami'" and Ibn Hajar in "Nata'ij al-Afkar" (1/ 120) declared it hasan. Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad (15632), Abu Dawud (4023) and al-Tirmidhi (3458) via Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Muqri'. Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan gharib". Technical note: In the narration of Nusayr bin al-Faraj there is, at the end, the addition "and his later sins as well" (wa ma ta'akhkhar), which is "munkar", because he is alone in this addition. Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (3285) narrated the first part of this hadith with the chain Abd Allah bin Wahb from Sa'id bin Abi Ayyub. Details of the narration: It will come again at no. (7597); there the chain has Yahya bin Ayyub in place of Sa'id, which is an error.
