Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1877

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a circle, and a man was standing and praying. When he had bowed and prostrated, completed the tashahhud and supplicated, he said in his supplication: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka bi-anna lakal-hamd, la ilaha illa ant, badi'us-samawati wal-ard, ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram, ya Hayyu ya Qayyum' (O Allah, I ask You by virtue of the fact that all praise is Yours; there is no god but You, the Originator of the heavens and the earth without any precedent; O Possessor of Majesty and Bounty and Honour! O Ever-Living, O Sustainer of all!). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has supplicated by that Greatest Name of Allah by which, when He is called upon, He answers, and when something is asked of Him, He gives."
This hadith is sahih on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is sahih, and this chain is strong on account of Khalaf bin Khalifah. There is disagreement over the name of Hafs, the nephew of Anas (Tahdhib al-Kamal 7/ 80); some call him Hafs bin Abd Allah, others Hafs bin Ubayd Allah or Hafs bin Umar.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud (1495), al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban (893) via Khalaf bin Khalifah. Ibn Hibban clarified that this is Hafs bin Abd Allah bin Abi Talhah, the maternal brother of Ishaq.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad 19/ (14205) and Ibn Majah (3858) with the chain Abu Khuzaymah from Anas bin Sirin.
Defect ('illah): This chain is weak on account of Abu Khuzaymah (Yusuf bin Maymun al-Sabbagh).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam al-Tirmidhi (3544) with the chain Sa'id bin Zarbi from Asim al-Ahwal and Thabit, from Anas.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "gharib" from this route. We say: Sa'id bin Zarbi is a weak narrator.
