It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) (through another chain) that he said: Whoever says these words: 'La ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar, wal-hamdu lillah, wa subhan Allahi kathira, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (There is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, all praise is for Allah, I glorify Allah abundantly, and without the enabling of Allah there is neither strength to avoid evil nor power to do good), his sins are forgiven, even if they are more than the foam of the sea.
The (previous marfu') hadith of Hatim bin Abi Saghirah is sahih on the condition of Imam Muslim, because such an addition from a trustworthy narrator like him is accepted.
Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is hasan on account of Abu Balj, about whom discussion has passed in the previous narration. Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam al-Tirmidhi immediately after hadith (3460), and by al-Nasa'i at (9874), with the chain Muhammad bin Bashshar from Muhammad bin Ja'far. Variation in the chain: Abu al-Nu'man al-Hakam bin Abd Allah, narrating it from Shu'bah, differed in its wording (al-Nasa'i: 9873). His wording is: "Whoever says these words, his sins are forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea." Technical note: This wording is "shadh"; although Abu al-Nu'man is thiqah, he was prone to errors, and perhaps this is one of his errors.
