Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1866

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever says ten times: 'La ilaha illallah, wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir' (There is no god but Allah, alone, He has no partner; to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over all things), will receive a reward equal to freeing a slave."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is sahih, and this is a chain whose narrators are acceptable, except that Muhammad bin Talhah bin Musarrif did not hear from his father, as will be explained at number (2144); but he has been corroborated.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Regarding al-Hasan bin Atiyyah (Ibn Najih al-Qurashi), Imam al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis" that al-Azdi declared him weak.
Note / Clarification: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar also reported the same in "Tahdhib al-Tahdhib", but said: I think he (al-Azdi) confused him with the narrator before him.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (30/18516) from Affan bin Muslim, from Muhammad bin Talhah, with this chain, but without the "repetition ten times"; in Ahmad it is part of a longer hadith.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam Ahmad (18518, 18704) narrated it by way of Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj, al-Nasa'i (9876) by way of Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir, and Ibn Hibban (850) by way of Zubayd al-Iyami, all three from Talhah bin Musarrif. Shu'bah's narration is lengthy.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (18531) narrated it by way of Qunan bin Abd Allah al-Nihmi, from Abd al-Rahman bin Awsajah.
Details of the narration: It contains this addition: "or lends out a milch animal, or gives ruqaq as a gift, it is like freeing a slave."
