Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1851

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty is too modest to let His servant spread out both his hands before Him (in request), pleading in them for some good, and then return those two hands empty and disappointed."
This chain is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, and Ja'far bin Maymun has narrated it with a connected chain (mawsul) through Abu Uthman al-Nahdi.

Technical note: The text between square brackets [ ] had dropped out of the manuscripts, and we restored it from the narration of Yazid bin Harun in sources other than the author.

Sahih li-ghayrihi: This narration is sahih li-ghayrihi (sahih through other chains), and this chain is "hasan" for corroboration and support because of Amir bin Yisaf, whose status we have mentioned earlier under number (1409).
Criticism of a narrator: Imam al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis": Amir narrates munkar reports (dhu manakir).
Important point / Summary: Apparently this chain is among the solitary narrations of the author (al-Hakim), because we found no one other than him who narrated it by way of Hafs bin Umar from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This hadith is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) by several other routes, but they are not routes to be pleased with (i.e. they are all weak).
Reference / Source: Ma'mar narrated it in "al-Jami'" (19648) (and from him Abd al-Razzaq in "al-Musannaf" (3250), and by way of Abd al-Razzaq al-Baghawi in "Sharh al-Sunnah" (1386)), and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (8/131) by way of al-Fudayl bin Iyad, both (Ma'mar and al-Fudayl) from Aban bin Abi Ayyash, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Grading: Aban is a "matruk" narrator. Abu Nu'aym said: al-Fudayl narrated it thus from Aban, and it is gharib, well known as the hadith of Abu Uthman al-Nahdi from Salman; he added that the hadith of Aban bin Abi Ayyash is not sound because he was devoted to worship and hadith was not his field.
Reference / Source: Abu Ya'la (4108) (and from him Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" 4/61) narrated it from Ibrahim bin al-Hajjaj al-Sami, from Salih bin Bashir al-Murri, from Thabit, Yazid al-Raqashi and Maymun bin Siyah, from Anas.
Grading: This chain is weak because of the weakness of Salih al-Murri.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Du'a" (204) from al-Miqdam bin Dawud, from Habib bin Abi Habib (the scribe of Malik bin Anas), from Hisham bin Sa'd, from Rabi'ah bin Abi Abd al-Rahman, from Anas.
Grading: This chain is "very weak" because Habib is "matruk", and some even called him a liar.
Reference / Source: With this same chain al-Tabarani also narrated in "al-Du'a" (205) from Anas that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the servant supplicates, raising his hands and asking Him, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says: I am shy of My servant to turn him away (empty-handed)."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The preceding hadith of Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) supports it.
