Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1844

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The mufarridun (those who have outstripped others) have gone ahead." The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and who are the mufarridun? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Those who are devoted to the remembrance of Allah (and are absorbed in remembering Him)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note: Abu Amir al-Aqadi is Abd al-Malik bin Amr.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (14/8290) narrated it from Abu Amir al-Aqadi, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (15/9332), Muslim (2676) and Ibn Hibban (858) narrated by way of al-Ala' bin Abd al-Rahman bin Ya'qub, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was travelling on the road to Makkah and passed by a mountain called Jumdan, and said: "Travel on, this is Jumdan; the mufarridun have gone ahead." They asked: "Who are the mufarridun, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "The men and women who remember Allah much."
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi (3596) narrated it by way of Umar bin Rashid, from Yahya bin Abi Kathir, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, marfu', with the words: "those devoted (al-mustahtarun) to the remembrance of Allah; remembrance removes their burdens from them, so they come on the Day of Resurrection light". Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan gharib", but there is agreement on the weakness of its narrator Umar bin Rashid.
Note / Clarification: "Al-Mufarridun" (also read "al-mufridun") are, according to various explanations, those who seclude themselves for the remembrance of Allah and devote themselves to observing His commands and prohibitions, or the aged whose contemporaries have died and who remain occupied with the remembrance of Allah.
Note / Clarification: "Yuhtarun" means to be so utterly devoted to something that one speaks of nothing else and does nothing else. (See "al-Nihayah" and "Sharh Muslim")
