Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1842

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has some angels who travel about the earth and are assigned in addition (to seek out remembrance), who search for gatherings of remembrance on the earth. When they come upon a gathering of remembrance, they cover one another with their wings until they reach the heaven. Then Allah, Glorified and Exalted, asks them, while He is the most knowing of their condition: Where have you come from? They say: O our Lord, we have come from those servants of Yours who were glorifying You, 'Subhan Allah' (Allah is free of all imperfection); magnifying You, 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest); praising You, 'Al-hamdu lillah' (All praise is for Allah); declaring Your oneness, 'La ilaha illallah' (There is no god but Allah); asking of You and seeking Your protection. Allah Almighty says: What do they ask of Me? while He Himself is the most knowing. They say: O our Lord, they ask You for Paradise. Allah says: Have they seen it? They say: No, O Lord. Allah says: Then what would their state be if they had seen it? Then Allah says: From what do they seek My protection? while He Himself is the most knowing. They say: From the Fire (Hell). Allah says: Have they seen it? They say: No. Allah says: Then what would their state be if they had seen it? Then Allah Almighty says: Bear witness that I have forgiven them all, I have given them what they were asking for, and I have granted them protection from what they were seeking protection from. Then the angels say: O our Lord, among them was a very sinful servant who (came for some purpose and) sat with them, and he was not one of them (those remembering Allah)! Allah Almighty says: I have forgiven him too. These are the people whose companion (the one who sits with them) is not left wretched and deprived."
This hadith is sahih (authentic), and Imam Muslim bin al-Hajjaj alone recorded it, in abridged form, from the narration of Wuhayb bin Khalid from Suhayl.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: In the printed edition this name is misspelled "al-Khazzaz"; in (z) it is written "al-Kharraz", in (s) "al-Harraz" and in (a) "al-Kharrar". The correct reading is "al-Jazzar" (with jim, zay and a final ra), as we have vocalised it at hadith number (2219) later.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note: Abu Bakr bin Ishaq's name is Ahmad, and Abu Muslim is Ibrahim bin Abd Allah bin Muslim al-Kajji.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (14/8705) narrated it from Hasan bin Musa, from Hammad bin Salamah, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (12/7426, 14/8972) and Muslim (2689) narrated it by way of Wuhayb bin Khalid al-Bahili, and Ahmad (14/8704) by way of Zuhayr bin Muhammad, both from Suhayl bin Abi Salih.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (12/7424) and al-Tirmidhi (3600) narrated it by way of Abu Mu'awiyah al-Darir, al-Bukhari (6408) and Ibn Hibban (857) by way of Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid, and Ibn Hibban (856) by way of al-Fudayl bin Iyad, all three from Sulayman al-A'mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him); but Abu Mu'awiyah's narration is with doubt: "from Abu Hurayrah or Abu Sa'id". Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih".
Variation in the chain: Imam Shu'bah narrated it from al-A'mash as "mawquf" (Ahmad 7425), but this does not affect the marfu' narration, because although Shu'bah's version appears mawquf, it is something that cannot be said from personal opinion, so it has the "ruling of marfu'".
Note / Clarification: Various pronunciations are reported for the word "fudulan" (including "fudalā'", plural of fadil, and "fudulun"). According to the scholars its meaning in all versions is that these are angels in addition to the recording angels and others assigned to creation, whose only task is to seek out the circles of remembrance. (Fath al-Bari 19/452-453)

Important point: Contrary to the claim of Imam al-Hakim, Imam Muslim did narrate it at length by way of Wuhayb bin Khalid from Suhayl.
