It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no Muslim who makes a supplication in which there is no mention of sin or of severing the ties of kinship, except that Allah Almighty grants him one of three things: either his supplication is answered (in this world), or an evil equal to it is turned away from him, or an equal reward is stored up for him (in the Hereafter)." The Companions said: Then we will supplicate abundantly. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah is more abundant (in giving) than that."
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (its chain is authentic); however, the two Shaykhs did not record it through Ali bin Ali al-Rifa'i.

Jayyid hadith: This hadith is jayyid (good), but this chain is weak because of the weakness of Muhammad bin Yazid Abu Hisham al-Rifa'i; however, he has been corroborated. Technical note: Abu Usamah is Hammad bin Usamah; Ali bin Ali is Ibn Najjad al-Rifa'i, who is saduq and good in hadith; and Abu al-Mutawakkil is Ali bin Dawud (or Ibn Du'ad) al-Naji. (1850). Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (17/11133) narrated it by way of Abu Amir al-Aqadi, from Ali bin Ali, with this chain. The hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that comes next under (1850) also supports it. Reference / Source: The hadith of Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) was narrated by Abd Allah bin Ahmad in his additions to his father's "al-Musnad" (37/22785) and by al-Tirmidhi (3573), who called it "hasan sahih gharib" from this route. Note / Clarification: "Then we will do more" means: then we will make supplication abundantly. Note / Clarification: "Allah is more" means that Allah's bounty and giving are far greater than your supplications. (Al-Sindi's gloss on al-Musnad)
