Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1835

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Nothing averts destiny except supplication, and nothing increases one's lifespan except righteousness (and good treatment of relatives), and indeed a person is deprived of provision because of a sin that he commits."
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (its chain is authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Hasan li-ghayrihi: The text is hasan li-ghayrihi except for the phrase "A man is deprived of provision because of a sin he commits". This chain can possibly be considered hasan because of Abd Allah bin Abi al-Ja'd, from whom two or three narrated and whom Ibn Hibban listed in "al-Thiqat"; he is alone in narrating the phrase referred to. Abu Hudhayfah is Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (37/22386, 22413), Ibn Majah (90, 4022), Ibn Hibban (872) and al-Nasa'i in "al-Raqa'iq" (as in "Tuhfat al-Ashraf" (2093)) narrated it by various routes from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this chain.
Repetition: This narration will come later under number (6152) with the chain Mujahid from Ibn Abbas from Thawban, but that chain is "ruined" (talif, extremely weak).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith of Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Tirmidhi (2139) supports it, and Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan gharib" as a hadith of Salman.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is also narrated from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) by al-Tabarani in "al-Du'a" (29), Ibn Shahin in "al-Targhib fi Fada'il al-A'mal" (150) and Abu Tahir al-Silafi in "al-Du'a" (24).
