Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said concerning this verse, "except for minor sins (al-lamam)" [Surah al-Najm: 32]: It refers to the person who falls into a sin and then abandons it. Have you not heard the saying of the poet: "O Allah, if You forgive, then forgive abundantly; and which servant of Yours is there who has not committed a lapse (lamam)?"
This mawquf narration does not weaken the chain of the first (marfu') narration, because Zakariyya bin Ishaq is a trustworthy hafiz, and Rawh bin Ubadah also narrated this hadith from him. I have already mentioned, among the conditions of this book, the recording of Qur'anic interpretations reported from the Companions.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The chain is sahih from the side of Abu Bakr bin Ishaq, but the first teacher, Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hasan, is weak. Important point: This narration too is "mawquf", and according to al-Bayhaqi this is the correct (mahfuz) version. Note / Clarification: Mansur mentioned in the chain is "Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir". Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Sunan" (10/185) and "Shu'ab al-Iman" (6656) via Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim. Important point: Al-Bayhaqi also stated explicitly that this narration is preserved only as mawquf. Note / Clarification: The poet whom Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) alluded to may be, according to the books of language, "Abu Khirash al-Hudhali" or "Umayyah bin Abi al-Salt". Note / Clarification: "اللَّمَم" means minor sins (sagha'ir); another view is that it means drawing near to sin without actually committing it (that is, the intention of sin or its preliminaries).
