أخبرنا إسماعيل بن محمد بن الفضل الشَّعراني، حدثنا جدِّي، حدثنا عبد الله بن صالح، حدثني حَرْمَلة بن عمران التُّجِيبي، أنَّ أبا السمط (2) سعيد بن أبي سعيد المَهْري حدَّثه عن أبيه، عن عبد الله بن عمرو (3): أنَّ معاذ بن جبل أراد سفرًا، فقال: يا رسول الله، أَوصني، قال: "اعبُدِ الله ولا تُشْرِكْ به شيئًا" قال: يا رسول الله، زِدْني، قال: "إذا أسأتَ فأحسن" قال يا رسول الله، زِدْني، قال: "اسْتَقِمْ ولتُحسِّن خُلُقَك" (4).
هذا حديث حسن صحيح الإسناد من رواية المصريِّين، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to set out on a journey, so he said: O Messenger of Allah, give me counsel. He ((peace and blessings be upon him)) said: "Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him." He said: O Messenger of Allah, (tell me) more. He ((peace and blessings be upon him)) said: "When you do something bad, then do good (after it)." He said: O Messenger of Allah, tell me more. He ((peace and blessings be upon him)) said: "Be steadfast, and make your character good."
This hadith is hasan sahih in its chain through the narration of the Egyptians, but the two of them (Imam Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(2) كذا وقع في أصول "المستدرك"، وهو كذلك في "الجرح والتعديل" لابن أبي حاتم 4/ 32، ونصَّ على وقوعه كذلك عنده قاسم بن قطلوبغا في كتابه "الثقات" (4433)، وقد وقع في عامّة مصادر التخريج مكنّى أبا السُّميط بضم أوله مصغَّرًا، ونصَّ عليه ابن ماكولا في "الإكمال" 4/ 360 - 361.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It is recorded this way in the original manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak" and in Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil".
Note / Clarification: In the takhrij sources his kunyah is generally written as "Abu al-Sumayt" (with a dammah on the sin, in the diminutive form), as Ibn Makula explicitly stated in "al-Ikmal".
(3) تحرّف في (ص) والمطبوع إلى: عمر.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscript (S) and the printed book the word has been distorted here into "Umar".
(4) حسن لغيره، وهذا إسناد محتمل للتحسين، عبد الله بن صالح -وهو كاتب الليث- وإن كان في حفظه شيء، قد توبع، وسعيد المهري روى عنه اثنان وذكره ابن حبان في "الثقات". ¤ ¤ وسيأتي مرة أخرى من طريق عبد الله بن صالح برقم (7808).
Grading: On the basis of supporting reports it is "hasan li-ghayrihi" (hasan due to external support), and this chain is possibly hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is criticism of the memory of Abd Allah bin Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, but he is corroborated; and Ibn Hibban mentioned Sa'id al-Mahri in "al-Thiqat".
Important point: This narration will come again at number (7808).
وأخرجه ابن حبان (524) من طريق عبد الله بن وهب عن حرملة بن عمران، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it (524) through the chain of Abd Allah bin Wahb from Harmalah bin Imran.
وروى نحوه ميمونُ بن أبي شبيب عن معاذ كما في الحديث السابق، أخرجه من طريقه أحمد 36/ (21988) و (22059)، والترمذي بإثر (1987).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Maymun bin Abi Shabib also narrated it from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), as reported by Ahmad (in several places) and al-Tirmidhi.
