It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Dharr, fear Allah wherever you are, follow an evil deed with a good deed and it will wipe it out, and treat people with good character."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (Z) and (B) and the printed book the name appears as "Ahmad bin Muhammad", which is wrong, while in manuscript (S) the name is given correctly.
Grading: This hadith is hasan. Technical note / Defect ('illah): All its narrators are thiqah; Maymun bin Abi Shabib is "saduq (truthful) and hasan al-hadith", but his narration from Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) is "mursal", because he did not hear from him. Note / Clarification: Some have made it a narration of Maymun from Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him). Sufyan mentioned in the chain is "Sufyan al-Thawri". 131. Reference / Source: This narration of Abu Dharr was reported by Ahmad and al-Tirmidhi (1987) through various routes from Sufyan. Grading: Al-Tirmidhi and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar (al-Amali al-Mutlaqah: p. 131) declared it "hasan". Reference / Source: Ahmad (35/21487) narrated part of it via al-A'mash. Grading: Had its teachers (ashyakh) not been unknown, the chain would be good (jayyid); still, it can be cited among corroborating chains and supporting reports. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The next hadith of Mu'adh bin Jabal is a supporting report for it.
