Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1797

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Quraysh were called the "Hums," and in the state of ihram they would enter (their houses) through the doors, whereas the Ansar and the other Arabs would not enter through the doors in ihram. Once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in a garden, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) came out through its door, and Sayyiduna Qutbah bin Amir al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) came out with him. The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! Qutbah bin Amir is a sinful man, because he came out through the door with you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "What made you do that?" He said: "I saw you do it, so I did as you did." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am one of the Hums." He said: "My religion is the same as your religion." Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And it is not righteousness that you enter houses from their backs, but righteousness is (in) the one who fears Allah. And enter houses through their doors." [Surah al-Baqarah: 189]
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this addition.

Hadith Grading

Grading: The chain is strong (qawi), but there is disagreement over whether it is connected (muttasil) or mursal. 'Ammar bin Ruzayq narrated it as "mawsul" (connected) through al-A'mash from Abu Sufyan (Talhah bin Nafi') from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), while a difference is reported from 'Abidah bin Humayd on this point.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Wahidi (in Asbab al-Nuzul) and al-Hazimi through various routes, likewise as "mawsul".
Variation in the chain: Abu al-Shaykh, on another occasion, narrated it through Abu Yahya al-Razi from al-A'mash from Abu Sufyan as "mursal" (without the Companion).
Variation in the chain: Hannad bin al-Sari also narrated it through 'Abidah as "mursal" (see: Ghawamid al-Asma' 2/737).
Important point: The basis of this story of Qutbah (may Allah be pleased with him) is established from the hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) in Musnad Ahmad (22/14607) through Ibn Lahi'ah.

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is the hadith of al-Bara' bin 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (1803) and Muslim (3026).
Note / Clarification: The words "I am an Ahmasi" refer to the Quraysh and their offspring, as 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr explained in al-Bukhari and Muslim.
