Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1771

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that we said: "O Messenger of Allah! These pebbles that we throw (at the Jamarat) are taken away from there; we think they must be diminishing." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, those that are accepted are raised up, and were it not so, you would see them (piled up) like mountains."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs did not record it; and Yazid bin Sinan is not an abandoned (matruk) narrator.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: The text in brackets [ ] has dropped out of the manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak"; al-Bayhaqi narrated it from Imam al-Hakim with this same chain, in which the mention of Yazid bin Sinan from Zayd bin Abi Unaysah from 'Amr bin Murrah is established.

Grading: What is correct is that it is "mawquf" (the saying of a Companion). This chain is "da'if" (weak) because of the weakness of Yazid bin Sinan (Abu Farwah al-Rahawi), and Imam al-Dhahabi also pointed to this same defect.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani and al-Daraqutni narrated it through the route of Sa'id bin Yahya al-Umawi with this same chain, and in their versions Zayd bin Abi Unaysah is mentioned between Sa'id and 'Amr.
Grading: Ibn Abi Shaybah (4/32) and al-Bayhaqi narrated through the route of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah this saying of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): "The pebbles that are accepted are lifted up". This chain is "sahih".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A similar saying is also reported as mawquf from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) (see Ibn Abi Shaybah 4/32).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This saying is also reported as mawquf from Sa'id bin Jubayr.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Al-Azraqi and al-Fakihi also narrated it as mawquf from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym cited the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) as "marfu'", but Imam al-Bayhaqi declared it weak.
