Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1744

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed two Hajjs before the Hijrah, and after the Hijrah he performed one Hajj, in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) combined Umrah with the Hajj (that is, he performed Hajj al-Qiran).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih. Although Abu Bakr bin Abi Darim has been criticised, he has been corroborated here.
Technical note: Ja'far bin Muhammad is Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq.
Defect / Technical note: Imam al-Bukhari criticised this narration, saying that Zayd bin al-Hubab erred in it, and that what is preserved (mahfuz) is that this narration is "mursal" from Sufyan al-Thawri from Abu Ishaq from Mujahid.
Important point / Summary: Ibn Khuzaymah declared this report sahih and argued that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed Hajj before the Hijrah, as established by the testimony of Jubayr bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with him) that he saw him (peace and blessings be upon him) standing at 'Arafat.
Scholarly response: Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir gave a solid answer in 'al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah' (7/473): Imam Ibn Majah narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri via 'Abdullah bin Dawud al-Khuraybi (who is someone other than Zayd bin al-Hubab). Apparently Imam al-Bukhari, al-Tirmidhi and al-Bayhaqi did not come across this route of al-Khuraybi.
Important point / Summary: As Ibn Kathir said, this narration will come later at number (4430) through the route of al-Khuraybi, and when it is combined with the earlier narration of Jubayr bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with him) (1722), this report is established as sahih with certainty. Because of the breadth of Sufyan al-Thawri's knowledge, one of his narrations does not contradict the other.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi (815) narrated it via Zayd bin al-Hubab with this same chain, in more detailed wording than here.
