Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1739

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked him about sacrificing a cow, and he said: It is on behalf of seven people. He asked: What if its horn (is broken) or it is lame? He said: When it reaches the place of slaughter (the sacrifice is valid). And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to examine the eye and the ear (of the animal) carefully.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: In our manuscripts and in the 'Talkhis' some text has apparently dropped out here; Ibn Khuzaymah (2915) and al-Bazzar (754) narrated it through the route of Wahb bin Jarir, and it contains these words: "So he asked: The horn (is its defect also to be considered)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It will not harm you. Then he asked: Lameness?" to the end.

Grading: Its chain is "hasan", like the previous chain.
Technical note: Jarir, the father of Wahb, is Ibn Hazim, and Abu Ishaq al-Hamdani is 'Amr bin 'Abdullah al-Sabi'i.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (2/734, 1312) and al-Tirmidhi (1503) narrated it through various routes from Salamah bin Kuhayl with this same chain. Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih".
Note / Clarification: In the words "idha balaghat al-manasik", 'manasik' is the plural of mansik (with both kasrah and fathah on the sin), meaning the place of slaughter.
