It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to examine the eye and the ear (of the sacrificial animal) carefully.

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih, and this chain is "hasan" because of Hujayyah bin 'Adi al-Kindi. Technical note: Abu al-Nadr is Hashim bin al-Qasim. Reference / Source: This narration is in "Musnad Ahmad" (2/1022, 1309) via Muhammad bin Ja'far with this same chain, but there it is given at length, like the wording of the next hadith. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (826, 1021) and al-Nasa'i (4450) narrated it through various routes from Shu'bah. Both of Ahmad's narrations are likewise given at length. Reference / Source: 'Abdullah bin Ahmad narrated it in his additions to "Musnad Ahmad" (1106) through the route of Abu Ishaq from Hubayrah bin Yarim from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and its chain is "hasan". (7726). Repetition: Through the route of Hujayyah this narration will come later in greater detail at numbers (1739, 7724, 7725, 7726). Note / Clarification: On the words "nastashrif al-'ayn wa al-udhun", Ibn al-Athir says: that is, we examine carefully that the eye and ear are free of every defect. Another view is that it comes from 'shurfah', meaning the best of property, i.e. we were commanded to choose the best animals.
