It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade sacrificing an animal with a broken horn or a cut ear. Qatadah said: I mentioned this to Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, and he said: 'Adab (broken or cut) means half or more than half.

9/ 294. Grading: This chain is weak because of "tafarrud" (being narrated by one person alone) and "mukhalafah" (contradiction). Jurayy bin Kulayb is alone in narrating it. There are two narrators with this name: the first 'al-Nahdi' (as here) and the second 'al-Sadusi'. The critics have been inconsistent about them. Imam al-Bukhari, Ibn Abi Hatim and Ibn Hibban treated both as one and the same person, whereas Abu Dawud and al-Mizzi distinguished between them. Defect / Technical note: The basis of this disagreement is the inconsistency of Qatadah's students regarding his name. Shu'bah and Sa'id bin Abi 'Arubah called him sometimes al-Sadusi, sometimes a man from Qatadah's people, and sometimes al-Nahdi. However, Hammam bin Yahya and Hisham al-Dastuwa'i called him 'al-Sadusi', and this is the better-known and preferred view; those who called him al-Nahdi were mistaken. Al-Sadusi is a Basran narrator from whom only Qatadah narrated, whereas al-Nahdi is a Kufan from whom the Kufans narrated. Technical note: So it is established that the narrator of this report is al-Sadusi, from whom only Qatadah narrated and whom Qatadah praised, whereas Ibn al-Madini declared him "majhul" (unknown), because no one other than Qatadah narrated from him. (1739). Variation in the chain: The contradiction in it is that it is authentically established from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he did not consider sacrificing an animal with a broken horn to be disliked, as will come later at number (1739). Reference / Source: This hadith is in "Musnad Ahmad" (2/1066) via 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (1157) narrated it from Hajjaj al-Massisi, and al-Nasa'i (4451) through the route of Sufyan bin Habib, both from Shu'bah. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it from Qatadah through the routes of Hisham al-Dastuwa'i (633) and Hammam bin Yahya (791). Repetition: This narration will come later at number (7720) through the route of Shu'bah and Sa'id bin Abi 'Arubah, and its takhrij will be given there. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (864) narrated through the route of Jabir al-Ju'fi that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade sacrificing an animal with a broken horn and a cut ear. Grading: Its chain is weak and munqati' (broken); however, the instruction to examine the eye and ear carefully is authentically established as marfu' in the next hadith. Note / Clarification: "'Adba' al-qarn" means an animal with a broken horn. According to Ibn al-Athir, 'adab can also be in the ear, but it is used more for the horn. According to Ibn Qudamah, al-'adba' is an animal that has lost half of its ear or horn.
