Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1736

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, gesturing with his hand (and my hand is shorter than the blessed hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)): "Four kinds of animals do not suffice for sacrifice: the one-eyed animal whose loss of an eye is evident, the sick animal whose sickness is apparent, the lame animal whose lameness is obvious, and the emaciated animal that has no marrow left in its bones." (The narrator said:) I said: I also dislike a defect in the ear and the horn. He said: Leave whatever you dislike, but do not make it unlawful for others.
This hadith is sahih (authentic), and the two Shaykhs did not record it because of a hidden defect ('illah) in the narrations of Sulayman bin Abd al-Rahman, whereas Ali bin al-Madini has made clear his virtues and his precision; and this hadith has various sahih supporting narrations (shawahid).

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note: Muhammad bin Ja'far's nickname is 'Ghundar', Yahya bin Sa'id is al-Qattan, and Abu Dawud is Sulayman bin Dawud al-Tayalisi. The one narrating from these three here is Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal.
Reference / Source: This narration is in "Musnad Ahmad" (30/18542) via Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan alone, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (3144) and al-Nasa'i (4444) narrated it via Muhammad bin Bashshar from Yahya bin Sa'id, Muhammad bin Ja'far, 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi and Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, and they also added Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi and Ibn Abi 'Adi alongside them.
Reference / Source: Ahmad, Abu Dawud (2802), al-Tirmidhi (1497), al-Nasa'i (4443) and Ibn Hibban (5922) narrated it through various routes from Shu'bah. Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih" and said: We do not know it except through 'Ubayd bin Fayruz from al-Bara', and the people of knowledge act upon this hadith.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (4445) and Ibn Hibban (5919, 5921) narrated it through the two routes of 'Amr bin al-Harith and al-Layth bin Sa'd, via Sulayman bin 'Abd al-Rahman.
Technical note: Imam Malik bin Anas narrated it from 'Amr bin al-Harith from 'Ubayd bin Fayruz, and dropped (omitted) the name of Sulayman bin 'Abd al-Rahman from the chain. It is narrated in Musnad Ahmad (18675); see the discussion of this chain there.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi (1497) narrated it through the route of Muhammad bin Ishaq from Yazid bin Abi Habib from Sulayman bin 'Abd al-Rahman.
Defect / Technical note: Al-Awza'i narrated it via 'Abdullah bin 'Amir al-Aslami; it will come later at number (7717). 'Abdullah is a weak narrator, and he made the chain "mu'dal" (two narrators missing in the middle) between Yazid and al-Bara'.
Direction: For details of this hadith's chain and the variation that occurred in it, see "Musnad Ahmad" (18510).
Repetition: A similar hadith will come later at number (7718) through the route of Abu Salamah from al-Bara'.
Note / Clarification: On the words "my hand is shorter than the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)", 'Allamah al-Sindi says: that is, the narrator showed his own hand to explain that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had likewise indicated with his hand, but my hand is smaller than his hand.
Note / Clarification: "Al-kasir" has been explained as an animal with a broken leg that is unable to walk. In al-Tirmidhi's narration the word "al-'ajfa'" (weak and emaciated) occurs in its place, which is clearer. "La tunqi" means an animal so emaciated that no marrow is left even in its bones.

Technical note: Manuscript (B) has "li-qillah".
