Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1725

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood at Arafat, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) said 'Labbayka Allahumma labbayk' (Here I am, O Allah, here I am), he also said: "Indeed, the true good is only the good of the Hereafter."
Imam Bukhari used Ikrimah as evidence and Imam Muslim used Dawud as evidence, and this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is "layyin" (soft, weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Jamil bin al-Hasan and his teacher Mahbub bin al-Hasan (whose name is Muhammad) both have weakness. They are alone in reporting the words "The only good is the good of the Hereafter", except for the "mursal" narration which Imam al-Shafi'i recorded in "al-Umm" (3/391) through Mujahid, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite the talbiyah aloud (in its known wording), until, on one occasion, as the people were dispersing from him, he (peace and blessings be upon him) seemed pleased with what he was in, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) added: "Labbayk, truly the (real) life is the life of the Hereafter."
Scholarly defence: (The editors say:) Perhaps it is on the basis of this supporting report that Ibn al-Jarud and Ibn Khuzaymah declared this hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) sahih, and al-Haythami called its chain hasan in "Majma' al-Zawa'id" (3/223). According to al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, its narrators have been declared reliable; Jamil has been criticised, but there is no harm in accepting his narration in corroborating chains.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Jarud narrated it in "al-Muntaqa" (470) and Ibn Khuzaymah at (2831), and through him al-Bayhaqi (5/45) also transmitted it.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Awsat" (5419) from Muhammad bin Harun al-Ansari. All three of them (Ibn al-Jarud, Ibn Khuzaymah and Muhammad bin Harun) narrate it from Jamil bin al-Hasan al-Jahdami with this same chain.
