Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1714

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Sakhbarah (may Allah have mercy on him): I went with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) from Mina to Arafah. Ibn Mas'ud was a man of wheat-coloured complexion with long locks, and he had the simplicity of the desert people about him. He was calling out the talbiyah in a loud voice, and some ignorant people gathered around him and said: O Bedouin, this is not a day for the talbiyah but for the takbir. At that he turned towards me and said: Have the people become ignorant, or have they forgotten? By the One who sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth, I set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from Mina to Arafah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not stop calling out the talbiyah until he stoned the Jamrah, although he would also mix takbir and tahlil ('La ilaha illallah', there is no god but Allah) into the talbiyah.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "jayyid" (good) on account of Safwan bin 'Isa and his teacher al-Harith bin Abi Dhubab.
Technical note: Mujahid refers to Ibn Jabr al-Makki.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (7/3961) narrated it by way of Safwan bin 'Isa with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad, Muslim (1283) and al-Nasa'i (4039) narrated by way of Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid that Abd Allah (bin Mas'ud) recited the talbiyah when departing from Muzdalifah, and someone said: Is this a Bedouin? Abd Allah said: Have the people forgotten, or have they gone astray?! I heard the one upon whom Surat al-Baqarah was revealed (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) saying in this very place: "Labbayk Allahumma labbayk." (The wording is Muslim's.)
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari (1683) narrated it in detail from Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid: We set out with Abd Allah for Makkah, then we reached Muzdalifah (and he went on with the report) and he continued reciting the talbiyah until he had stoned Jamrat al-'Aqabah on the Day of Sacrifice (10 Dhu al-Hijjah).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (6/3739) narrated by way of Thuwayr bin Abi Fakhitah that Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) continued reciting the talbiyah until he stoned Jamrat al-'Aqabah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Thuwayr bin Abi Fakhitah is a weak narrator.
