Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1682

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had cupping (hijamah) done on his blessed head while in the state of ihram.
This hadith is found with its chain in Bukhari and Muslim, but without the mention of the head, and it is sahih (authentic) on the condition of both of them.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Tawus al-Yamani is among its narrators.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 5 / (3524) narrated it by way of Rawh bin 'Ubadah.
Reference / Source: Ahmad, al-Bukhari (1835), Muslim (1202), Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i narrated it by way of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah from 'Amr bin Dinar, but these narrations do not mention "the head".
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi declared it "hasan sahih".
Important point: The mention of cupping (hijamah) on the head is narrated in Ahmad 4/ (2108), al-Bukhari (5700), Abu Dawud and others with the chain of 'Ikrimah from Ibn 'Abbas, that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had himself cupped while in the state of ihram because of a pain, or a migraine (shaqiqah), in his head.
Variation in the chain: In some narrations from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) there is variation over the words "in ihram" and "fasting"; we have set out the details in Musnad Ahmad and shown the error of the narration with "in ihram, fasting".
