Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1678

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he asked Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Zayd bin Arqam, do you know that ostrich eggs were presented as a gift to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the state of ihram, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned them?" He replied: "Yes."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Al-Harith bin Muhammad refers to Ibn Abi Usamah, and 'Ata' refers to Ibn Abi Rabah.
Reference / Source: Ahmad 32/ (19294 and elsewhere), Abu Dawud (1850), al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban narrated it by way of Hammad bin Salamah, but in their versions "a limb of game" (a piece of meat) is mentioned instead of "ostrich eggs".
Reference / Source: Ahmad, Muslim (1195) and al-Nasa'i narrated it with the chain of Tawus from Ibn 'Abbas that Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the meat of game was given as a gift to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was in the state of ihram, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned it and said: "We do not eat it; we are in ihram."
Reference / Source: It is narrated in al-Bukhari (1825 and elsewhere) and Muslim (1193) that al-Sa'b bin Jaththamah (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him (peace and blessings be upon him) a wild ass as a gift at al-Abwa' or Waddan; he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned it to him, and when he saw the expression on his face he said: "We only returned it to you because we are in the state of ihram."
