Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1665

Abu Umamah al-Taymi narrates: I used to hire out mounts on the road to Makkah, and some people said to me that (because of doing trade) your Hajj does not count. Then I met Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! I hire out mounts on this road, and people say that my Hajj is not accepted. He asked: "Do you not enter ihram, recite the talbiyah, perform tawaf, depart from Arafat and stone the Jamarat?" I said: Of course (I do all of this). He said: "Then indeed your Hajj is valid. A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him the same question you have asked me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent and gave him no answer until this verse was revealed: 'There is no sin upon you in seeking the bounty of your Lord (through trade)' [Surah al-Baqarah: 198]. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for him, recited this verse to him and said: 'Your Hajj is valid.'"
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.
