Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1661

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no room in Islam for sarurah (that is, not performing Hajj despite being able to, or shunning marriage and adopting monasticism)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its isnad is da'if (weak).
Criticism of a narrator: 'Umar bin 'Ata' bin Wazzar is a weak narrator. Imam al-Tahawi mistakenly thought he was Ibn Abi al-Khuwar, but that is not the case.
Criticism of a narrator: Abu Khalid al-Ahmar is Sulayman bin Hayyan, and Ibn Jurayj is Abd al-Malik bin Abd al-Aziz.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1729) narrated it via 'Uthman bin Abi Shaybah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Muhammad bin Bakr al-Bursani corroborated Abu Khalid al-Ahmar in this chain (no. 2706).
Variation in the chain: Rawh bin 'Ubadah narrated it from Ibn Jurayj as "mursal" (Musnad Ahmad 5/ 3113 m), with the wording: "There is no sarurah (celibacy, or never performing Hajj) in Hajj."
Important point: The meaning of "sarurah": Abu 'Ubayd says that it refers to abandoning marriage and living a celibate life. Common people take it to mean a person who has never performed Hajj; both meanings are valid in their place, but the first is the more eloquent.
