It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a military expedition or a journey and night came upon him, he would say: 'Ya ardu, rabbi wa rabbuki Allah, a'udhu billahi min sharri kulli asadin, wa sharri kulli aswada, wa hayyatin wa 'aqrabin, wa min sakini al-baladi, wa min sharri walidin wa ma walad' (O earth, my Lord and your Lord is Allah. I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of every beast of prey, from the evil of every black snake, from snakes and scorpions, from the evil of the inhabitants of this place (the jinn), and from the evil of the father (Iblis) and his offspring).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Grading: On account of al-Zubayr bin al-Walid al-Shami, this isnad may possibly be graded hasan. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar called it hasan in "Nata'ij al-Afkar". Criticism of a narrator: Abu al-Mughirah is Abd al-Quddus bin al-Hajjaj, and Safwan bin 'Amr is al-Saksaki. Reference / Source: Ahmad (10/ 6161), al-Nasa'i and Abu Dawud (2603) narrated it via the various routes of Baqiyyah bin al-Walid and Abu al-Mughirah.
Clarification: This hadith will come later via Muhammad bin 'Awf al-Ta'i from Abu al-Mughirah at no. (2518). Important point: "Al-aswad": this refers to a large black snake which is extremely venomous. It is mentioned specifically in the text because of the severity of its harm. Important point: "Sakini al-balad": according to al-Khattabi, this refers to the jinn who dwell on the earth, because "balad" is any place that is a dwelling for living creatures, whether or not there is any building there. Important point: "Al-walid": this may also refer to Iblis and his offspring (the devils).
