Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1653

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey and dawn began to break, he would say: 'Sami'a sami'un bi-hamdi Allahi wa ni'matihi wa husni bala'ihi 'alayna, rabbana sahibna fa-afdil 'alayna, 'a'idhan billahi min al-nar' (A listener has heard of the praise of Allah, His blessing and His excellent trial of us. Our Lord, be our Companion and bestow Your favour upon us, (I say these words) seeking refuge in Allah from the Fire). He (peace and blessings be upon him) would repeat these words three times in a raised voice.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: The word "'a'idh": according to Imam al-Nawawi it is in the accusative (mansub, as a circumstantial clause), meaning "while seeking refuge with Allah". In the narration of Ibn Hibban, however, it is in the nominative (marfu'), meaning "I am one who seeks refuge". Both are valid.

Grading: Its isnad is sahih.
Criticism of a narrator: Al-Rabi' bin Sulayman al-Muradi is the student of Imam al-Shafi'i, and Abu Salih is Dhakwan al-Samman.
Reference / Source: Muslim (2718), Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i narrated it via Ibn Wahb.
Important point: The author's (al-Hakim's) inclusion of it in al-Mustadrak is an oversight, since it is already in Sahih Muslim. Ibn 'Ammar's objection to it is based on conjecture and is weak.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar and Ibn Khuzaymah also narrated it via the chain of Abd Allah bin 'Amir al-Aslami, but according to Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn 'Amir does not meet his condition, so he gave precedence to the narration of Sulayman bin Bilal.
Important point: "Sami'a sami'un bi-hamd Allah": Ibn al-Athir says it means: let the listener hear, and let the witness bear witness, that we praise Allah for His blessings. "Husn al-bala'" means blessing.
