It is narrated from Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) that whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a town which he intended to enter, he would make this supplication as soon as he saw it: 'Allahumma rabba al-samawati al-sab'i wa ma azlalna, wa rabba al-aradina al-sab'i wa ma aqlalna, wa rabba al-shayatini wa ma adlalna, wa rabba al-riyahi wa ma dharayna, fa-inna nas'aluka khayra hadhihi al-qaryati wa khayra ahliha, wa na'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha wa sharri ma fiha' (O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all that they shade, Lord of the seven earths and all that they carry, Lord of the devils and all whom they lead astray, and Lord of the winds and all that they scatter: we ask You for the good of this town and the good of its inhabitants, and we seek refuge in You from the evil of this town, the evil of its inhabitants and every evil that is in it).

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is sahih, and the isnad is hasan on account of Abu Marwan al-Aslami (the father of 'Ata'). There is disagreement over his name and over whether he was a Companion, but al-'Ijli and Ibn Hibban counted him among the thiqah (trustworthy) Successors. Criticism of a narrator: Ka'b is Ibn Mati' al-Himyari, well known as "Ka'b al-Ahbar". Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8776) narrated it via Abd Allah bin Wahb with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (2709) narrated it via Muhammad bin Abi al-Sari. Variation in the chain: Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad contradicted Hafs bin Maysarah in this, with a difference of one intermediary in the chain. Criticism of a narrator: Imam al-Nasa'i says that there is no harm in Hafs bin Maysarah, whereas Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad is a weak narrator. Variation in the chain: Muhammad bin Salamah narrated it from Muhammad bin Ishaq, but in it there is doubt about the name, Abu Mughith or Abu Mu'attib. Details of the narration: Al-Tabarani and Abu Nu'aym narrated it via Ibn Ishaq through an unnamed person whom he "does not suspect". (10305). Variation in the chain: Harun bin Abi 'Isa al-Shami also narrated it from Ibn Ishaq with an unnamed intermediary, in al-Nasa'i. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Salamah bin al-Fadl named this unnamed intermediary as "al-Hasan bin Dinar", but al-Hasan bin Dinar is matruk al-hadith (abandoned in hadith), so this chain would be very weak. Grading: This narration is reported from Ka'b al-Ahbar through another, sahih route, with the chain of Sulayman bin Bilal from Abu Suhayl bin Malik. Reference / Source: This hadith will come later at no. (2519) via Muhammad bin Abd al-Hakam from Ibn Wahb.
