Grading: It is sahih on the strength of other reports (sahih li-ghayrihi). The narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), but there is disagreement from Imam al-Layth bin Sa'd over whether it is muttasil (connected) or mursal. Variation in the chain: Al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Tirmidhi and al-Daraqutni declared the "mursal" narration (without mention of the Companion) to be correct. Criticism of a narrator: Abu Bakr bin Ishaq is Ahmad, Abu al-Nadr al-Faqih is Muhammad bin Muhammad (bin Yusuf), 'Uqayl is Ibn Khalid, and Ibn Shihab is al-Zuhri. Reference / Source: Ibn al-A'rabi, Ibn Bishran and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi narrated it via Muhammad bin Ghalib. Reference / Source: Ibn Khuzaymah (2555) and Abu Nu'aym narrated it via Muhammad bin Aslam. Reference / Source: Ibn Abd al-Barr narrated it in "al-Tamhid" (24/ 159) via Qabisah bin 'Uqbah. Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi, al-Bazzar (6315), Abu Ya'la (3618), al-Tahawi, al-Bayhaqi and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi narrated it via various routes from Ruwaym bin Yazid. Variation in the chain: Qutaybah bin Sa'id and Abd Allah bin Salih narrated it from Imam al-Layth as "mursal", without mention of the Companion. (1120). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ibrahim bin A'yan also corroborated it being mursal, as al-Daraqutni mentioned. Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to Imam Muslim bin al-Hajjaj (may Allah have mercy on him), al-Layth bin Sa'd's grandson Abd al-Malik had his grandfather's book, and in it this narration was recorded as "mursal". Grading: This narration will come later in al-Mustadrak (2567) via the chain of Abu Ja'far al-Razi from al-Rabi' from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), and its isnad is hasan. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic the narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is found in Imam al-Tahawi with a hasan chain. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) is found in al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani with a hasan chain. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Abd Allah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) is in al-Tabarani, and its narrators are thiqah. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Khalid bin Ma'dan from his father is in al-Tabarani, and its narrators are narrators of Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Another supporting report from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is narrated as marfu' in al-Bukhari (39) and Muslim (2816): "Seek help by travelling in the morning, in the evening and in part of the latter night." Important point: "Al-duljah" means travelling by night.
