Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1638

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best number of companions (travel companions) is four, the best army consists of four thousand (fighters), and twelve thousand (a sincere army) will not be defeated merely because of small numbers."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it. There is a fourfold disagreement over its chain from Imam al-Zuhri, which I have explained in my book "al-Talkhis".

Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), but there is disagreement over whether it is muttasil (connected) or mursal.
Variation in the chain: Abu Dawud and al-Daraqutni declared the "mursal" version correct, whereas Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Hibban and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi held the "mawsul" (connected) version to be correct. Imam al-Tirmidhi called it hasan.
Reference / Source: It was narrated with a connected chain by Imam Ahmad (2682), Abu Dawud (2611), al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Hibban. According to Imam al-Tirmidhi, hardly anyone besides Jarir bin Hazim narrates it as connected; rather, it is narrated from al-Zuhri as mursal.
Details of the narration: We have given the details of the mursal narration in the takhrij of "Musnad Ahmad", which makes repeating it here unnecessary.
Clarification: It will come later with a connected chain in "al-Mustadrak" (2520) via Abu Qilabah al-Raqashi.
