It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Hani (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "The one who fasts voluntarily is his own master (free to decide); if he wishes he may complete the fast, and if he wishes he may break it."

Grading: Its chain is da'if because of its idtirab (inconsistency), the details of which are in the commentary on the Musnad of Ahmad 44/ (26897). Criticism of a narrator: Abu Salih's name is Badham; he is also called Badhan, the freed slave of Umm Hani'. The name of Umm Hani' bint Abi Talib is given as Fakhitah or Hind. Reference / Source: This route of Abu Salih from Umm Hani' was narrated by Imam Ahmad (45/ 27385) through the chain of Safwan bin 'Isa. Criticism of a narrator: This Abu Salih is a da'if narrator. Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (3295) narrated it through the route of Khalid bin al-Harith from Hatim bin Abi Saghirah, and a story is mentioned in it. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Nasa'i says that this hadith is mudtarib and that there is disagreement over Simak bin Harb in it. When Simak is alone, he is not reliable, because he used to accept prompting (talqin).
