أخبرنا أبو بكر بن إسحاق، أخبرنا أبو المُثنَّى، حدثنا مُسدَّد، حدثنا إسماعيل ابن عُليَّة، عن عُيينةَ بن عبد الرحمن، عن أبيه قال: ذُكِرَتْ ليلةُ القدر عند أبي بَكْرةَ فقال: ما أنا بطالبِها إلَّا في العشر الأواخر [بعد حديثٍ سمعتُه من رسول الله ﷺ، سمعتُه يقول: "التَمِسوها في العشر الأواخر] (2) في تسعٍ، أو في سبعٍ يَبْقَينَ، أو في خمسٍ يَبْقَين، أو في ثلاثٍ يَبْقَين، أو في آخر ليلةٍ"، فكان لا يُصلِّي في العشرين إلَّا صلاتَه سائرَ سَنَتِه، فإذا دخل العَشرُ اجتَهَدَ (1).

When Laylat al-Qadr was mentioned in the presence of Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "I seek it only in the last ten, on account of a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Seek it in the last ten nights, when nine (nights of the month) remain, or seven remain, or five remain, or three remain, or on the last night.'" The narrator states that in the first twenty days of Ramadan Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) would pray as usual, like the rest of the year, but when the last ten began he would strive hard and exert himself (in worship).
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

(2) ما بين معقوفين سقط من النسخ الخطية ومن مطبوعات "المستدرك"، وأثبتناه من "تلخيص المستدرك" للذهبي، وكذلك هو في مصادر التخريج التي أخرجته من طريق إسماعيل ابن عُليَّة.
Important point: The wording in brackets had dropped out of the manuscripts and the printed Mustadrak; we established it from al-Dhahabi's Talkhis and from the other sources of Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah's narration.
(1) إسناده صحيح. أبو المثنّى: هو معاذ بن المثنى.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Criticism of a narrator: Abu al-Muthanna refers to Mu'adh bin al-Muthanna.
وأخرجه ابن حبان (3686) من طريق مؤمل بن هشام، عن إسماعيل ابن عُلَيَّة، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (3686) narrated it through the chain of Mu'ammal bin Hisham from Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah, with this same chain.
وأخرجه أحمد 34/ (20376) و (20404) و (20417)، والترمذي (794)، والنسائي (3389) و (3390) من طرق عن عيينة بن عبد الرحمن، به.
