It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that a woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while we were with him, and she said: "O Messenger of Allah! My husband, Safwan bin al-Mu'attal, beats me when I pray, makes me break my fast when I fast, and does not pray the Fajr prayer until the sun has risen." The narrator says: Safwan was present there, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him about the woman's complaint. He said: "O Messenger of Allah! As for her saying that I beat her for praying, she recites two surahs (in the prayer) which I have forbidden her from, and I told her that if a single surah were recited it would suffice the people. As for her saying that I make her break her fast, she starts keeping (voluntary) fasts while I am a young man and cannot restrain myself (from my natural need)." So on that day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No woman should keep a (voluntary) fast except with her husband's permission." And as for her saying that I do not pray until the sun has risen, we are a household known for this (that we sleep deeply), and we hardly wake up until the sun has risen. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(Safwan!) When you wake up, then pray."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Criticism of a narrator: Its narrators include Jarir (bin 'Abd al-Hamid), al-A'mash (Sulayman bin Mihran), Abu Salih (Dhakwan al-Samman) and the Companion Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ahmad 18/ (11759) and Abu Dawud (2459) narrated it through the route of 'Uthman bin Abi Shaybah, where the words "If it were only a single surah, it would suffice the people" are reported as marfu', as the speech of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), not as the speech of Safwan. No one other than Imam al-Hakim narrated it as mawquf, which shows that its being mawquf here is an error, most likely made by some narrator below 'Uthman bin Abi Shaybah. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (1488) narrated it through the chain of Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr bin Harb from Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid. Reference / Source: Ahmad (11801) narrated it through the route of Abu Bakr bin 'Ayyash from al-A'mash. Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (1762) narrated it through Sulayman bin Mihran from Abu Salih from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade women from praying (voluntary prayer) without the permission of their husbands." Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Bukhari found this hadith problematic, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar reported in al-Isabah 3/ 441; al-Bazzar called it munkar and judged it defective because of the tadlis of al-A'mash. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar gave reasoned answers to these difficulties in al-Fath 14/ 35-36. (2044). Reference / Source: On this, see the words of Imam al-Tahawi in Sharh Mushkil al-Athar (2044). 2/ 136. General principle: For the juristic understanding of this hadith, refer to al-Khattabi's Ma'alim al-Sunan 2/ 136. (1026). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Concerning a woman not fasting without her husband's permission, the narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is found in al-Bukhari (5192) and Muslim (1026).
